Update on Winery Name

Posted on Tuesday 22 November 2005

We had a bit of setback on the winery name. It appears someone already has a winery with our first choice name so we’re forced to come up with another alternate. Feel free to leave a comment with any suggestions you might have. Free case on release if we use your suggestion.

EDIT: Tom Wark over at his Fermentation Blog was kind enough to mention our little project today. Thanks Tom, for both the kind words and the advice!

He notes that it’s hard to suggest a winery name without knowing our family, vineyard and goals. True enough. So, in that vein here are a couple bits that may help you get to know us a little better:

Family matters. This project got started when Craig and Becky found out that Candace and I were seriously considering moving out of the area while I attended Law School. Soon after we all sat down and had a long talk about our hopes and dreams and the importance of family. The fruit of that conversation is the idea developing right here on the site. At its very core the winery is a way of knitting our family together and keeping us all involved in each other’s lives.

We’re passionate about making great pinot, and we think we have the grapes, location and the right wine stewards to do it. Here’s a bunch of other info on the vineyard.

So, that said, here are a few names we’ve been kicking around. Some we like much better than others, but tell me what you guys think.

Goldridge, after the sandy loam soil we are blessed with.
Laguna Ridge, which is the ridge on which our vineyard is planted.
Cloudy Valley, aptly describes the RR AVA.
Aperture, the thinking revolving around the overlap of the art/science of winemaking with the art/science of photography, the importance of light, etc (photography is another passion of mine).

We don’t want to name the winery after our family name, however. Its just too long. Long and German.

Anyway, have at it!

Good luck on the name. I don’t have any ideas. But when you get your name be sure to trademark it so you don’t have to change it later!

I’m excited to hear that there will soon be another great Pinot Noir coming out of the RRV, good luck with getting the vineyard going. Hope to make a visit during one of my trips in Sonoma. A few ideas I had for naming your Winery:

    1) Effulgence Vineyard & Winery - http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Effulgence
    2) Conluence Vineyard & Winery - http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Confluence
    3) Bon Vivant Vineyards - http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Bon%20Vivant

    Best of Luck,
    David

hmmm… too bad about the name and good luck with the baby and the winery. Of couse you know this but loads of people name their wineries after their kids - land & reed, elyse, etc. So just run a trademark search on all the names you consider. Or you could name your winery after my kids, Patrick and Quinn!

Just come across your blog @ wine blog watch - wow, what I fantastic project you are embarking on!! I wish you all the luck in the world & look forward to keeping up with your progress, so I hope you manage to keep up the blog with all the work you are going to have on your plate with this project AND a new baby!! I only just got into this blogging stuff, but I’ll put a link on my blog site, as I will be watching with interest. Can’t offer much on the name front, I think that kind of thing is kinda personal.

OK…..I had to give it a shot on the names:

Ground Bound (ties to he soil….and catchy sounding…memorable)

NeedlePoint (Liked your words about “knitting together” the family

Whole Cloth (see above…plus…nice symetrical letters when used together)

The Family Estate (I can’t believe this simple, evocative name isn’t in use)

Cloud Bound (sounds a bit better than “cloudy valley”)

Fog Bound (it really is about the fog)

    Laguna Heights (Everyone uses “ridge”)

Steadfast (It’s a cool sounding word and suggests your determinatiion)

Kin (short, easy to remember, and it’s all about the family)

    Genesis Valley.
    Too biblical?
    Lighthouse
Tayylor’s Run. (Insert your own kid’s name instead of mine)
    Best of luck

I will put up a link to your naming contest on my blog at WineGuy.com. Sounds like you are maybe losing a little sleep on the name and when the baby comes you may lose a bit more. Good luck on naming the winery and in the spirit of wine lovers everywhere here is my submission:

Insomnia Winery - “The grapes may sleep but we never do!”

    Cheers!

David, Tom and Bradley, thank so much for your suggestions. I’m definately going to run a few of them up the flag pole and see what the others think. Your input is much appreciated.

Chris, we all had a good laugh over the Insomnia Winery suggestion. Good stuff. Thank you as well for spreading the word. Don’t worry too much about me losing sleep over the winery name. This is the FUN part (well, its all fun) of the process. We’re not reaching out to the blogosphere out of desperation, but out of a confidence that more minds > few.
Added your site to the blogroll as well. Look forward to reading more of your stuff.

EDIT: Chris, I finally see where you got the impression that I really wasn’t sleeping! The post times in my wordpress blog timestamp feature were set to Eastern Time. I’m still up late, but I’m not a zombie.

[...] Soon after starting the blog we asked readers to help us try and conjure up an appropriate name for the winery. Thanks to Tom Wark we got a nice bump in traffic as well as some quality suggestions from him and others (Insomnia Winery anyone?). I also got a chance in that post to explain our motivation for starting the winery. In short, it’s all about keeping our family close and connected. [...]

[...] If you would, take a moment to vote on one of the following label designs. Since the beginning of this winery blog I’ve been using it as a forum for gathering feedback from you so I figured I’d take this opportunity to continue the tradition. [...]

I just ran across your letter. Don’t know any history but what I just read but I can tell you Cloudy Valley is great! Reminds me of the movie - A Walk in the Clouds. It is a mystical name - intriguing enough to want to go visit.
