First, the logo

Posted on Friday 16 December 2005

Since we want our label and brand to exude the elegance and style of the varietal, and to play upon both the feminine character and European roots of the pinot noir grape, we, like everyone else making pinot, are going to have our logo designed in script. (I’m being sarcastic of course. Many producers eschew script in favor of block capitals like Williams Selyem, Merry Edwards, Lynmar, Russian Hill and others)

Amidst all this conformity however, a small but bright light of originality! I’ve sent a request over to The Calligraphy Lady asking her to design a custom, handcrafted Capozzi script just for us. The Calligraphy Lady specializes in wedding invitations, but her range and ability is amazing, and based on her previous work we think she’ll do a wonderful job. If she has the time.

In any event, we won’t be going with a canned font. They all lack a certain personality that is important for a logo, and especially important for a wine brand.

UPDATE: Excellent news. The Calligraphy Lady, whose name is Dayna, is available, and seems genunely excited to be a part of our project. And her rates are reasonable as well. Very exciting!
